There are four broad strands of work that I have been engaged in, and played a key role in developing, over the last 35 years:
• aetiological research related to diet, activity and NCD, particularly from a developmental origins perspective;
• research focusing on undernutrition;
• development of an evidence based approach to nutrition research;
• applied research and development aimed at achieving change, with particular focus on building nutrition capacity in low and middle income countries.
I established and was first editor in chief of the international journal Public Health Nutrition.
I was founding president of the World Public Health Nutrition Association.
I developed and ran the first Masters in Public Health Nutrition in the UK. I Developed and run a range of nutrition capacity development training programmes around the world.
I have served on various government policy and evidence review groups.
I have been involved in a number of university and other institutional reviews of progress and performance.
